KANEOHE BAY, Hawaii -- Camp Smith crushed Command Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 2’s Terror Squad 62 - 44 March 26 at the Semper Fit Center, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, during an intramural basketball game.
Both teams started strong, testing their opposition, but as the game progressed Camp Smith laid down the pressure, leaving Terror Squad in the dust ending the first half 33 - 27.
Despite their six-point lead, Camp Smith stayed humble and focused on the second half of the game.
“We’re doing pretty good,” said James Roberts, Camp Smith’s coach. “We started off a little slow but started clicking and playing the way Camp Smith is supposed to. Next half’s a whole new game though.”
Frustrations mounted during the second half as Camp Smith quickly scored basket after basket, bringing on a string of fouls from Terror Squad.
With each foul, Camp Smith widened the gap in their scores, landing multiple free throws.
“Through out the whole week (Terror Squad’s) been talking out of the side of their neck, but we set them straight tonight,” said Joseph Sanders, Camp Smith shooting guard. “We kept the lead and kept control of the game.”
With less than two minutes on the clock and a more than 10-point gap, Terror Squad didn’t let up, challenging Camp Smith at every turn. But their efforts were in vain as Camp Smith took the win by 18-points.
“We kind of beat ourselves tonight,” said Brian J. Washington, Terror Squad’s coach. “Camp Smith was on their game, and we just didn’t play our best.”
Camp Smith, the #2 team in the 2010 Winter Intramural League, took Terror Squad’s #1 undefeated season from them.
“There’s a well known rivalry between us,” said Ryan Ashley, Camp Smith’s power forward/ center. “Both of us really haven’t had any competition this year and I know they can play better than they did tonight. I’m looking forward to us going head-to-head in the championship game.”
