Marines with 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, participate in a ceremony honoring the legacy of the French fourragere award aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Nov. 22, 2016. The French fourragere is a military award given to units as a whole for meritorious acts of conduct in action. The heroic acts of valor made the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments the only two units of the American Expeditionary Force to receive the fourragere. Marines display the award with a green and red braided rope with a spike on the end worn around the left shoulder of the service alpha uniform. Marines and sailors with the 5th Marine Regiment honored Staff Sgt. Randolph Elder with the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously during a ceremony at the 5th Marines Memorial Garden, Aug. 16,. Elder was among the first African Americans to enlist in the Marine Corps after it was desegregated during 1941 by President Franklin Roosevelt.
