U.S. Marines with Marine Rotational Force – Darwin 24.3 and Australian Defence Force service members participate in a volleyball tournament at Larrakeyah Defence Precinct, Darwin, NT, Australia, April 19, 2024. The tournament provided a friendly, competitive environment further strengthening the Australia-U.S. Alliance. MRF-D 24.3 is part of an annual six-month rotational deployment to enhance interoperability with the Australian Defence Force and Allies and partners and provide a forward-postured crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific. March 2024 MARFORPAC Highlights
Throughout the month of March 2024, Pacific Marines were actively involved in various training and exercises, to include Iron Fist 24 and Cobra Gold 24, two large-scale annual exercises which further strengthen regional partnerships and operational effectiveness. Some of the training featured includes free-fall operations and room clearing training with the Royal Thai Marine Corps, bilateral flights between 1st Marine Aircraft Wing and the Republic of Korea Marine Air Group, and 3rd Marine Division live-fire exercises. Pacific Marines are consistently engaged with Allies and partners throughout the theater to improve mutual capabilities and interoperability in support of shared security objectives as well as promote a free and open Indo-Pacific. Cobra Gold 24: Japanese, Thai and U.S. service members complete Ban Nong Yai School ENCAP project
Members from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, Royal Thai Army, U.S. Army Soldiers from the 555th Engineer Brigade and 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) and U.S. Marines from Marine Wing Support Squadron (MWSS) 171, Marine Aircraft Group 12 work together to construct a multipurpose building during Exercise Cobra Gold 2024 (CG24) at the Ban Nong Yai School, Chachoengsao Province, Kingdom of Thailand, Feb. 8-Mar. 7, 2024. Joint Exercise Cobra Gold is the largest joint exercise in mainland Asia and a concrete example of the strong alliance and strategic relationship between Thailand and the United States. Cobra Gold 23: MWSS-171 Completes Cobra Gold 2023(Package/Pkg)
Members from the Singapore Armed Forces Army Combat Engineers Company, Royal Thai Navy Construction Battalion and U.S. Marines from Marine Wing Support Squadron (MWSS) 171 and MWSS-172 construct and dedicate a building at the Ban Mor Mui School during Exercise Cobra Gold 2023 (CG23), Rayong, Kingdom of Thailand. MWSS-171 and MWSS-172 participated in the 42nd iteration of the Cobra Gold series of exercises, where they lended their engineering expertise to multilateral humanitarian efforts. CG23 emphasized readiness and cooperation amongst the participating nations through command and control, field training, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. Cobra Gold 2022: Jungle Survival Training
SATTAHIP NAVAL BASE, Kingdom of Thailand - Members of the Royal Thai Marine Corps Reconnaissance Battalion instruct U.S. Marines with 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division on jungle survival techniques during exercise Cobra Gold 2022 at Sattahip Naval Base, Chonburi Province, Kingdom of Thailand, Mar. 1, 2022. The training consisted of finding food and water sources, how to find and build shelter, and how to interact with animals in the wild. CG 2022 is the 41st iteration of the international training exercise that supports readiness and emphasizes coordination on civic action, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. From Feb. 22 through March 4, 2022, this annual event taking place at various locations throughout the Kingdom of Thailand increases the capability, capacity and interoperability of partnered nations while simultaneously reinforcing commitments to a free and open Indo-Pacific. U.S. Marines with Marine Rotational Force - Darwin conduct a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System rapid infiltration during Exercise Loobye at Bradshaw Field Training Area, NT, Australia, Aug. 12, 2021. HIRAIN is the process of identifying an enemy target from forward observation points and unmanned aerial vehicles, seizing key terrain for an aerial landing, inserting HIMARS onboard a Royal Australian Air Force C-17 Globemaster III, destroying the target and retrograding back to a secure location. Exercise Loobye is a tangible demonstration that the U.S. Marines and the Australian Defence Force are postured to respond to a crisis or contingency in the Indo-Pacific region.
