Marines with 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, participated in a wildland firefighting class aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., June 27, 2014. Due to the current drought in the Western United States, I Marine Expeditionary Force decided to pre-train a group of Marines to be ready if they are needed. These Marines are not being trained to be ready for an immediate response to routine local fires that are normally short in duration, but for those uncommon situations in which larger fires burn out of control for long periods, exhausting all primary firefighting resources. U.S. Marines with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 262 (Reinforced) (VMM-262 (REIN)), 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) conduct shipboard aircraft fire fighter training at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan. The training was designed to prepare Marines to assist Navy personnel in combating fires on the flight deck of an amphibious vessel in an emergency situation. Marines of Camp Pendleton, Calif., and their families thanked the firefighters and first responders who fought to extinguish the May 2014 wild fires near base.
