Steel Knight 25 REEL: Stingers Conduct Close Air Support
U.S. Marines with 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, conduct terminal guidance for air delivered munitions fired by AH-1Z Viper helicopters assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA) 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, during exercise Steel Knight 25 at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Dec. 4, 2025. The integration of H-1 attack helicopters with 11th Marines, demonstrates 3rd MAW’s ability to deliver responsive, precision fires in support of the Marines on the ground across the battlespace. Steel Knight is an annual exercise that strengthens the Navy-Marine Corps team's ability to respond forward, integrate across domains, and sustain Marine Air-Ground Task Force readiness. U.S. Marines with the Ground Combat Element, Marine Rotational Force – Darwin, integrate with the Australian Army to conduct close air support training at Delamere, Northern Territory, Australia, Aug. 14, 2020. Joint terminal attack controllers and forward air controllers from both countries shared tactics and techniques to become more capable as a combined force. CAS provides aviation fire in support of friendly forces who may be in close proximity to an opposing force. Commemorating the Fallen: U.S. Marines Play Memorial Rugby Match in Darwin
On Sept. 11, 2017 U.S. Marines with Marine Rotational Force Darwin played a rugby match against the Darwin Stray Cats Rugby Club to honor and remember the lives lost during the terrorist attacks on 9/11. The match has become an annual event to commemorate the friendships made during a rugby match that took place between U.S. Marine and sailors with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Stray Cats on September 11, 2001.
