CAMP H.M. SMITH, Hawaii – Residents in the vicinity of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) will hear increased aircraft and artillery noise Monday, Jan. 31 between 1:00-2:00 p.m. Marine Corps aircraft will perform a flyover and an artillery battery will fire a 15-round salute as part of military honors being rendered to late Marine Corps Lieutenant General Henry “Hank” C. Stackpole III.
U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific will conduct this ceremony to honor the life and service of Lt. Gen. Stackpole, who passed away May 29, 2020; COVID restrictions prevented the family and the Marine Corps from honoring him properly until now.
Lt. Gen. Stackpole was born May 7, 1935, and entered the Marine Corps after graduating from Princeton University in 1957; he served on active duty in the Marine Corps for 37 years. He last served as the commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific and commanding general of Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, headquartered at Camp H.M. Smith, HI, from July 1992 to July 1994.
