IWO JIMA, Japan -- U.S. Marines and Japanese veterans traveled to the famous battle site March 18 for the 64th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony of the battle of Iwo Jima. Vets from both nations placed wreaths in honor of their fallen comrades.
Iwo Jima was the site Joe Rosenthal captured the Pulitzer Prize winning photo of the five Marines and one Navy corpsman planted an American Flag on top of Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945. Japan lost nearly 22,000 soliders and America lost more than 6,800 on the island during fierce fighting.
