Colonel Carl E. Cooper, Jr. Chief of Staff

Colonel Cooper is currently assigned as Chief of Staff, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific.

Colonel Cooper was commissioned in May 1993, following graduation from Louisiana State University.  Upon graduation from the Basic Officer Course and Infantry Officer Course, The Basic School, Colonel Cooper was assigned to 2d Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment.  During this tour Colonel Cooper deployed to Okinawa, Japan with 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.  Colonel Cooper then served consecutively as Operations Officer and Executive Officer, Marine Corps Recruiting Station Orange, California.

In August 2001, Colonel Cooper was assigned to 2d Marine Division.  Colonel Cooper served as Commanding Officer, Company K, 3d Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.  Colonel Cooper was subsequently assigned as Operations Officer, 2d Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Following graduation from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in June 2005, Colonel Cooper was assigned to Plans, Policies, and Operations Department, Headquarters, Marine Corps and served as a future operations officer in Current Operations Branch, Operations Division.  In July 2008, Colonel Cooper was assigned as Deputy Future Operations Officer, G3, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.  Upon redeployment, Colonel Cooper was assigned as a future operations planner, G-3, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Colonel Cooper assumed command of 3d Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment in October 2011, and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.  Upon deactivation of the battalion in August 2013, Colonel Cooper was reassigned as Executive Officer, 8th Marine Regiment. 

Following graduation from the National War College in June 2015, Colonel Cooper assumed command of 3d Marine Regiment.  Upon relinquishing command in July 2017, Colonel Cooper was assigned as Executive Officer to Commander, U.S. Africa Command.  In August 2019, Colonel Cooper was assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific, where he initially served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations, G3, prior to assuming his current position.
