Dec 6, 2009
Retired Maj. John Hughes returned to what remains of Marine Corps Air Station Ewa Dec. 6 for the first memorial ceremony 68 years after the Japanese attacked on Pearl Harbor. Hughes was the first Marine to see Japanese bombers flying overhead toward Pear Harbor. 'I looked up and saw planes with a red ball on the side and a torpedo underneath,' he said. 'I knew what that meant so I ran to the guard shack and told them to start breaking out ammo.' (Official U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Juan D. Alfonso) (Released)
