Balikatan is an annual U.S.-Philippine military bilateral exercise focused on a variety of missions, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, counterterrorism, and other combined military operations. BK 33-2017 will take place in the Philippines May 8 to 19.

During BK 33-2017, Philippine and U.S. service members will conduct humanitarian civic action activities throughout Panay, Leyte and Samar. The exercise will also demonstrate cooperation and interoperability between the Philippines and the U.S., consistent with the Mutual Defense Treaty and Visiting Forces Agreement, to continue the commitment to train and share information to improve the ability to coordinate a bilateral response to natural disasters.

This year’s iteration of Balikatan focuses on high value training events designed to enhance the capabilities of both AFP and U.S. armed forces to provide relief and assistance in the event of natural disasters and other crises that endanger public health and safety.
