Service members and community members joined strides during the 12th Annual 5K Grueler Sept. 17 here.

Supporting Headquarters and Service Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific, cadets from the Kalaheo High School, junior reserve officer training corps and running enthusiasts took to the road for a short, but inspiring run through the twists, turns and grueling hills of the base.

Starting at Sunset Lanai, participants faced 3.11 miles of uphill terrain to the helicopter pad and downhill comfort, returning to the track at Bordelon Field as viewers cheered at the finish line.

“It was a good run and a good way to build relations with the community,” said Cpl. Wesley Cary, training clerk with Headquarters and Service Battalion, and first time participant. “It was very intense, but well paced and enduring.”

Once the final participant crosses the line the times were counted and the runners were given a chance to cool down.

Participants were awarded in nine categories based on age and gender as well as the top three overall finishers for males and females.

Results:

Top three males overall-

First place with a 20:16 run time, Brian Harrington.

Second place with a 20:42 run time, Bruce Jenkins.

Third place with a 21:40 run time, Ronald Shiver.
