Sgt. Maj. Michael D. Berg, sergeant major for Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Forces, Pacific, stood tall as he passed his legacy of leadership to his successor in a relief and appointment ceremony at Bordelon Field here, March 7.

Berg received the noncommissioned officer sword from Col. Cosmas R. Spofford, commanding officer, Headquarters and Service Battalion, MARFORPAC, who then presented to Sgt. Maj. James Roberts.

Berg received the Meritorious Service Medal for his leadership within the command. Following the award presentation, Berg spoke of his time at MARFORPAC, which was followed by a brief speech from Roberts about his time to come.

“This happens to be my last page in this chapter,” Berg said. “But I’ve got one more chapter left to go in my Marine Corps career.”

In Berg’s 27-and-a-half years serving in the Corps, he has dedicated two-and-a-half years to the Marines of MARFORPAC.

“I knew this command would be a challenge when I got here, but I’ve formed a lot of friendships,” Berg said.

Berg’s next command is Marine Corps Logistics Base, Barstow, Calif.

Roberts stepped up to fill the position for this leadership role.

“I’m looking forward to the job and the challenge,” Roberts said. “I’m also looking forward to working with all the Marines and serving as your sergeant major.”

Roberts joins MARFORPAC after serving as the Marine Corps Air Facility sergeant major at Kaneohe Bay, Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
